Ha! I use that hack as well - wherein you just pick a random seat and upon checking in you just ask if you can be seated somewhere else. I've only tried probably one or two times where I couldn't choose another seat because the flight was overbooked. I didn't know about OKmaps though, that sounds like handy tip for offline map use!
